FAQ: Volunteer Program Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign-up to volunteer for a Grassroots.org nonprofit?
All volunteer designers are invited to browse the volunteer bulletin board. If an organization's request interests you, send an introductory e-mail to the contact person listed on the opportunity (Please cc laura@grassroots.org on all initial e-mails).

What information should I include when I send an e-mail to a nonprofit about volunteering for them?
The first thing you should in your introductory e-mail to a nonprofit organization is that you are a Grassroots.org volunteer. Next, include information about your design or web development background. You can attach your resume, or provide links to your online portfolio or examples of previous work. If you have any initial ideas/reactions to the organization's post, definitely include them as well! In your first or second e-mail, you might suggest setting up a phone/Skype conversation to discuss the project in detail.

How much of my time am I expected to volunteer?
A minimum of 5 hours per week should be spent on your volunteer commitment (we are flexible if needed. Email laura@grassroots.org to discuss).

What resources are available to me as a volunteer?
Please visit our resources page.

How many organizations can I volunteer for at one time?
Most volunteers will take on one project at a time. While some ambitious volunteers will take on 2, the maximum Grassroots.org allows is 3 organizations at once.

What should I expect performing pro-bono work for a nonprofit?
This article "Get What You (Don't) Pay For" by Sheree Clark gives some great background on expectations and tips from Dynamicgraphics.com.

Is there a way for me to get feedback on my design?
Yes. The Grassroots.org team is always available to give feedback and volunteers are encouraged to take part in the Volunteers Forum.
